Among the more interesting places I have visited in Maine is the Old German Meeting House in Waldoboro. One of the oldest churches in the state, it was built in 1772 on the north side of the Medomak River by early German immigrants to the area.
Thanks, Janis. I've been there twice--once on my own and again with my class. A gentleman who grew up in the church showed us around and shared all kinds of interesting stories when asked. There is also a wonderful video on the Meeting House website.
Thank you for this interesting article ... and great photos. Someday I would love to visit the Meeting House. I can imagine to photographing it in all its beautiful natural light.
It is definitely worth a visit, Maureen. And it is equally beautiful in color…perhaps even more so. The key is calling ahead in summer to confirm when they are open, as this is handled by volunteers and the schedule can be sporadic.
Thanks so much for sharing the Midway Church with me, Lynne. Indeed, there are many similarities. Midway is just a short diversion when driving to Amelia Island, so I will have to stop there soon to see it. It is located on Rt. 17 just south of Savannah. (I almost always drive Rt. 17 below there.) Earlier this year, I drove Rt. 17 northwest of Savannah and have never seen such a concentration of small, country churches. I want to get back down there to photograph them. There is also a beautiful book and website, Historic Rural Churches of Georgia, worth checking out: https://www.hrcga.org
I've photographed there too but love reading your research about the church.

I was only outside. Your photos were fascinating.

A great write-up and wonderful photos. The inside images remind me of the Midway Church/Museum in Coastal Georgia.
