Just so beautiful Lee Anne, the lighting , texture and depth really make me want to stay with this photograph! Having taken your photographing close to home course was such a game changer for me. It was so beneficial to learn that one needn’t travel far to make art in “ your own back yard” So to say! I truly began to see in a new way and spend much more time observing and composing before clicking my shutter!

Thanks so much for the kind words, Jan. I'm glad you enjoyed the photograph and, more importantly, the workshop. I've enjoyed keeping up with your instagram feed since then. You've been busy!

I have oftentimes felt overwhelmed with my photography - the very thing that gives me such joy and peace. Trying to get to different places, learn new techniques, etc etc, at times can be too much. So I decided my focus this year would be to be more intentional. Photographing these places that I go by each day or weekly and trying to really "see" what is there. Taking time with one photograph - and not rushing to the next thing. Your photographs and your writing inspire me to do just that. I am going back to your photographing plants in the studio class - and doing some of the lessons that I missed due to work. In fact, once I made that decision to be more intentional and to slow down, the Santa Fe workshop popped up in my feed and I knew that was exactly what I need to do this summer. I registered right away. I look forward to seeing you there!

So nice to hear from you, Tammy. Yes, photography (like so many things) can get overwhelming, especially when we see so many amazing photographs of every kind every day. It makes us want to explore new subjects, experiment with new techniques and try new gear. Your comments about intention (why make a photograph) and attention (more about awareness and seeing) are so important. The two go hand in hand. I hope you will find focusing on the places you pass by each day will help and look forward to you in Santa Fe!

Your writing confirms the way I make photographs. I have three favorite locations I go to on a regular basis, and every time it’s different. It can change within hours. I’m thinking about creating groups of images taken in the same place over the years to highlight your experience.

Sounds like a great idea, David. There is such joy in watching the way a place changes over time. It also helps us to see light better and to attune our senses to the changing seasons.

Sorry, I am not very knowledgeable on birds! I just enjoy photographying them. Might contact Bill George, the leader of the local birder group. They frequently go on the greenway.

Photographing in the same area over a period of years creates a portfolio of images distant and near, high and low, morning through evening and across the seasons. For me, it just happens - I realize that I am drawn to a place and keep returning. Most often, these are places that most people walk past or spend very little time in. Many are surprised I find them so wonderful. But on many visits, I come home with something that I need to print and add to my box. It is most fun to lay them all out, sort, admire, remove one or two and put them all back in the box for the next time.

I love this, Leslie. Partly in our rush to go about our daily routines and partly due to familiarity, we often overlook the beauty that surrounds us. It takes slowing down and looking with greater intention to find these spots, but we are often surrounded by them. I love that you have places you have been photographing for years and also that you make prints and keep them in an accessible box that you pull out from time to time. Thanks for sharing.

Bill, maybe you can help me identify a bird seen along Eagan's Creek at sunset one day this week. I can't find it in any guides. About hawk size. White head with distinct rounded collar, gray beak (not too prominent), black body, black wings, white wingtips. Spotted in tree along edge of creek.

Thanks for the note, Bill. And thanks so much for the update on Mama Gator. The greenway is always a good place to explore. Lots of birds there now, too.
